Chapter 5 — A Dangerous Invitation
By Friday afternoon, the heavy tension from the night before still lingers in the quiet air of the 40th floor. Neither of you mentions what happened by the mahogany door, but every time Damien passes your glass office, his sharp blue eyes lock onto yours with an unspoken, possessive weight.
At four o’clock, his executive assistant drops a black velvet dress bag and a jewelry box onto your desk.
“Mr. Veyr expects you ready by six,” she says simply. “A private driver is waiting downstairs.”
Inside the bag is a floor-length tailored emerald silk gown with a high neckline and a low, open back. The dress fits like a second skin, clinging to your waist and skimming your hips. You pin your dark hair up, leaving a few soft strands to frame your face, and step into the black town car waiting at the curb.
The car delivers you to the top floor of the Belvedere Tower, an ultra-exclusive private club reserved for international financiers, foreign diplomats, and high-net-worth investors. The room is dimly lit by crystal sconces, filled with the murmur of classical violin music, expensive champagne, and low corporate chatter.
Damien is already there, standing near a cluster of tall marble high-tops. He wears a dark navy tuxedo that accentuates his broad shoulders and commanding height. The silver at his temples gleams under the chandelier lights.
When you step into the room, his eyes find you instantly. His conversation with a foreign board member peters out for a fraction of a second as his gaze tracks your approach, moving down the emerald silk of your dress to the bare skin of your exposed back, before lifting to meet your eyes.
You stop two feet away from him, keeping your posture regal and unbothered.
“Mr. Veyr,” you say smoothly.
“Miss Vale,” Damien replies, his low voice thick with an unreadable edge. He turns to the older, sharp-eyed man beside him. “This is Director Vale. She oversees our primary acquisitions.”
The man is Viktor Vance, a notoriously difficult Swiss investor holding the final European regulatory approval for Project Blackwood. Vance looks you up and down, his mouth twisting into a patronizing smile.
“A director?” Vance chuckles in thick-accented English, looking past you to Damien. “She looks barely old enough to finish a university thesis, Damien. You trust a girl this young with a multi-billion-dollar energy merger?”
Anger flares hot in your chest, but you don’t let a single muscle in your face slip. You step forward, cutting right into Vance’s line of sight.
“I trust numbers, Mr. Vance,” you say, your voice cool, sharp, and perfectly steady. “Specifically the eight-percent tax loophole your firm attempted to slide into the Zurich restructuring clause last night. If you want Veyr Global’s capital, you’ll drop the arbitrary holding fee, or we pull our debt offer and leave your Swiss entity to absorb the local regulatory penalties alone.”
Vance freezes. His patronizing smile vanishes instantly. He blinks, staring at you in absolute shock, before glancing at Damien to see if he will override you.
Damien doesn’t say a word. He takes a quiet sip of his scotch, his pale blue eyes gleaming with dark, silent pride as he watches you dismantle the investor’s leverage in three sentences.
“We… we can re-evaluate the holding fee,” Vance stammers, pulling at his collar. “Let us discuss the terms in the morning, Miss Vale.”
“Seven sharp,” you say flatly. “In my office.”
Vance nods hastily and excuses himself into the crowd.
As soon as the investor is out of earshot, a warm, heavy pressure settles against the bare skin of your lower back.
Damien steps up right behind you. His large, broad hand rests firmly against the small of your back, his warm fingers spreading across the exposed skin above your dress line. The heat of his palm sends a searing electric pulse straight up your spine, making your breath hitch in your throat.
He doesn’t pull you against him, but his touch is firm, possessive, and entirely deliberate—a controlled public claim that commands the space around you.
“That was ruthless,” Damien murmurs near your ear, his hand staying grounded against your skin as he guides you smoothly through the surrounding crowd of executives.
“It was necessary,” you say, tilting your chin up, though your pulse is hammering violently against your ribs where his hand rests. “He was testing you.”
“He was testing you,” Damien corrects softly, his thumb tracing a slow, agonizing circle against your bare skin before his hand slowly slides away as you reach the private back wing of the club. “And you destroyed him.”
By midnight, the event winds down. The crystal glasses are cleared, the violins stop playing, and the last of the international guests exit down the private elevator bank. The staff slips out through the service doors, leaving the sprawling, dimly lit lounge empty.
You pick up your black clutch from a side table, preparing to head toward the exit.
“Miss Vale,” Damien’s heavy voice echoes through the silent, shadowy room.
You turn around. He stands near the entrance of the private VIP conference suite at the end of the hall. He has removed his tuxedo jacket, holding it loosely over one broad shoulder. His collar is open, exposing the base of his throat.
“Yes, Mr. Veyr?” you ask, keeping your voice cool.
“Remain behind,” he commands quietly, his pale blue eyes locked onto yours in the dim light. “We need to go over Vance’s morning terms.”
You hold his gaze for three long heartbeats. You know crossing that threshold is dangerous. You know every step closer to this man burns away another layer of your defense. But you keep your chin up and walk toward him, your heels quiet against the plush carpet.
You step past him into the secluded, dark-paneled private suite.
Behind you, the heavy brass lock clicks loudly into place as Damien locks the door.
